Transgender Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves (and America!)

The transgender community and all of America truly have something to celebrate!

Transgender/American flag

On Tuesday, November 7th, history was made when Danica Roem was elected to the Virginia state legislature as one of the first openly transgender women elected to public office in America. Her Republican opponent refused to identify her by her proper pronouns, and with the help of his supporters produced ads ridiculing Roem’s transgender identity. But not so fast… there’s some delicious poetic justice to be found in Danica’s victory. Her opponent, a 13-term incumbent, was the chief architect of a hideously discriminatory “bathroom bill” that later died (thankfully) in committee.

When Danica was asked about her opponent, she replied, “I don’t attack my constituents. Bob is my constituent now.” Wow, what a lady! Class… with just a touch of shade.

And that wasn’t the only good news for equality in America. Andrea Jenkins was elected to the Minneapolis City Council as the first openly transgender woman of color elected to public office in the United States. Congratulations ladies! Maybe there’s still hope for humanity after all!
