I’m beyond hype for this movie, and being the militant lesbian that I am, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to put together a list of some of the most influential female directors to ever do it!
Can the mainstream film industry boast this many successful female directors?
Candida Royalle
Seriously, what would life even be like without Candida Royalle? That’s a world nobody wants to live in. Known as the pioneering female porn director responsible for bringing a female perspective to the industry in the 1980s, Royalle starred in over 25 films and turned to directing when the feminist movement made its way into porn. In addition to fighting for women’s rights, Candida made couples’ erotica a thing, started her own production company, and brought art and porn together.
Dana Dane
Through Dana Dane Productions, Dana Dane gave the world ErocktaVision, an AVN award-winning all-girl series known for its high-end production and music video style. In the series, Dana combined lipstick glam lesbians with bad ass dykes for a visual that everyone just had to see. She also directed for L Factor, Adam & Eve, and Pleasure Dynasty.
Shine Louise Houston
Shine Louise Houston put queer porn on the map with Pink And White Production and the Crash Pad series. As a queer woman of color, Shine felt it important and empowering for a woman to take charge of creating images representing those groups in some of their most intimate settings and moments and it has paid off. Along with Jiz Lee (what’s life without a little help from your friends?!), Houston has made Crash Pad synonymous with authentic queer porn and continues to leave her mark all over the porn industry.
Kay Brandt
Kay Brandt completely crushed 2016 with Babysitting The Baumgartners for Adam & Eve and then topped it with Adventures with The Baumgartners in 2017. With over 50 titles under her director’s belt and multiple erotic novels written since 2009, Kay is no doubt a major influence within the industry. Turning a novel into a film is not a new concept, but Kay was first to bring it to the adult industry, and the result has been consistent success. Not only is she an inspiration and blueprint for women looking to be successful writers and directors in any industry, she leads by example and is one of the reasons the creative space for women behind the camera is expanding.
Erika Lust
Erika Lust hit the ground running with Five Hot Stories For Her, and hasn’t looked back since. Erika took her mission of creating porn that’s inclusive, authentic, and different, and expanded it by writing books, hosting seminars, and she even has her own TED talk where she lectures on changes that need to be made within and to the industry. Erika even produces viewer-submitted fantasies into films under her series, XConfessions. The thoughtfulness that goes into everything Erika touches is evident, and the porn biz is better because of it.
Aiden Starr
Aiden Starr has been directing since 2014, and while most of her titles are produced for Evil Angel, she manages to direct in a variety of genres. Aiden has given us her gift of perspective on everything from lesbian, BBW, Femdom, and interracial, to transsexual, taboo, anal, and group sex. Dana Vespoli
You know Dana Vespoli, and if you don’t, I’m judging you. Jacky St. James
Jacky St. James is a director and screenwriter, and is one of the few women directors in the porn industry that has not performed in XXX films. After receiving her Theatre degree with a concentration in Film, James moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the mainstream entertainment industry, when a clip of The Wedding Day from the New Sensations Romance series lured St. James into the adult industry. After researching the Romance series and discovering that New Sensations was doing a writing contest for the series, St. James submitted her script, Dear Abby, and won the contest. Dear Abby became St. James’ first film and launched her career in porn. St. James liked the idea of making porn that couples could watch together.
Lily Cade
Lily Cade is my personal favorite. Before starting LilyCade.com, she directed for Filly Films and Severe Sex, and completely owned 2011-2015, creating high-quality, plot-based, authentic lesbian porn with top talent. Lily expanded the creative space people like [Shine Louise Houston] helped established and took it to new levels with sci-fi superhero themes, and tales of crooked cops. Her influence will be felt throughout the industry for years to come.
Proxy Paige
What would this list be without its inspiration!? Proxy Paige only has one title under her director belt right now, but Double Anal Sluts already has four out of five stars, and the plot setups for each scene are promising. The production quality is top-notch along with the talent, and anal is always better from a woman’s perspective!
