Sex Worker Friendly Charities That Deserve Your Attention

This year HotMovies launched our 12 Months Of Giving campaign and we’ve already learned so much just three months into the initiative. The recent deaths of multiple starlets combined with the current social climate when it comes to sex workers rights and healthcare has made us all sit back and re-evaluate how we situate and recognize sex work. With that, and the fact that we can’t donate to every single sex worker charity in mind, we wanted to put together a list of some of the sex worker friendly and supportive charities for you to check out.

Sex Workers Outreach Project

Sex Workers Outreach Project is a nationwide network focused on protecting and elevating the human rights of workers in the sex trade by educating communities on what sex work is, as well as what it’s not, in order to end the violence sex workers face daily. Dignity and respect, two of their core values, are central to their fight against social stigma, and the fact that they extend their work to communities outside of sex work betters their chances of reaching individuals who subscribe to “respectability politics.”

National Coalition For Sexual Freedom

Born in 1997, the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom has over 50 partners that all come together with one goal: to fight for the privacy and sexual freedom deserved to adults who engage in consensual sexual behavior. Over the years the NCSF has provided legal and social help to various communities, including BDSM and LGBTQ groups, and has shown it’s willingness to evolve with the changing sexual climate to include representation for polyamorous lifestyles. With sexual expression becoming more mainstream, the NCSF now looks to move their fight to the general public and continue advocating for protecting sexual rights for all walks of life.

Cupcake Girls

Brought to our attention by the beautiful and talented Jodi West, Cupcake Girls was our January charity of the month and we were thrilled to work with them. They specialize in connecting adult entertainers with community resources, which include medical care, domestic violence safe-houses, GED courses, career coaching, and parenting support. It’s easy to see why they’re considered a treat around the industry.

Sex Workers Project

Providing legal and social services to sex workers, regardless of how they began and why they continue sex work, is the Sex Workers Project specialty. One of their current campaigns is getting a bill passed in New York that will prevent law enforcement from using possession of condoms as evidence of intent to engage in prostitution, and I’m sure you can imagine the help that would bring. They also have tons of literature covering a range of topics meant to inform and educate.

Free Speech Coalition

The Free Speech Coalition was founded in 1991 and is well known for representing the adult entertainment industry in the fight against unjust obscenity and censorship laws. The FSC recognizes the huge role adult entertainment plays in developing sexual rights and how we understand them, which is why they’ve fought for more than 25 years, and continue to do so, for the adult entertainment space to be free of discriminatory policies and practices. They strive to protect the very freedom of speech that is constantly threatened within pornography and are always among the leaders of doing so.

Red Umbrella Project

In 2009, the Red Umbrella Project was launched as a volunteer-run organization geared at spreading the voices and experiences of people in the sex trades through public storytelling. Today, they take the same media-sharing approach to impact policy changes to support sex workers rights. In addition to fighting the never-ending legal battles, the Red Umbrella Project also provides counseling, job assistance, and other social services to the community.

Serenity’s Steps

Like all the charities on this list, Serenity’s Steps values human life regardless of profession and possessions, and vows to establish resources and safe environments that will ultimately help sex workers flourish. They offer volunteer opportunities that include community outreach and addiction recovery, just to name a few.

Global Network of Sex Work Projects

The Global Network of Sex Work Projects is a membership organization that began in 1990 with members all over the world that focus on upholding the voices of sex workers while fighting for their rights. Their first core value is establishing sex work as a legitimate profession in the eyes of society, as this is key to discussing and establishing rights and laws that sex workers need and deserve.
