Polyamory is the practice of engaging in multiple intimate relationships with the consent of every partner involved. It takes open relationships to the next level by introducing romantic values and themes (open relationships tend to be more about sex), as well as ethical practices into the mix in an effort to understand and minimize jealousy. Those in polyamorous relationships reject the idea that exclusivity is a requirement for deep, meaningful, long-term relationships, and strive to develop and grow multiple relationships with honesty, equality, and commitment being the foundation.
One of my favorite people in the industry is Andre Shakti, and through her I was first introduced to the polyamory world and what actually goes into poly relationships versus monogamous relationships. Many of the core values are the same, but one thing that seems to be more enhanced and practiced in poly relationships is communication and negotiation, and that’s what really grabbed my attention. The open honesty that has to be shared between all partners just seems so beautiful and refreshing at it’s core that it’s easy to see and understand how one would come to engage in this type of relationship.
It’s also easy to see how polyamory made it’s way into porn. At first we saw real swingers, cuckolds, couples banging their babysitters, and hotwives, just to name a few, but none of those are more about adding to the sexual experience. When looking for something that explored more of the inner workings of polyamorous relationships in addition to great sex scenes, I came across James Avalon‘s Polyamory series for Erotica X and dove in. By now most of know James’ directing is fantastic, so the groupings and sets are beautiful visually, but the stories in these movies are enough to jump start the poly fantasy, and the sex sustains it all. This is still entertainment, so don’t expect to learn all their is to know about non-monogamous relationships, but if you’re looking to explore them in your sexual fantasies, these are a great place to start. The potential for drama, the focus on primary and secondary connections, and of course the gorgeous casts and amazing sex scenes, are a damn good way to get your feet wet in the poly pool.
