If you wanted to publish an insightful book about the adult industry, there are only a handful of people who have enough experience, and more importantly—the right temperament—to do justice to 50 years of adult filmmaking. Many performers have written their own “insiders” view on the adult industry, but it is usually after they have retired and offered a glimpse into a specific time or era of the industry. Performers like Nina Hartley and Sean Michaels, who have careers dating back to the 1980s, could certainly offer a unique perspective and directors like Paul Thomas, Rocco Siffredi, or the AVN Hall-of-Fame Director Stuart Canterbury.
Stuart Canterbury began directing adult movies in 1985. He is an internationally renowned director who has worked with studios like Penthouse, Hustler, Adam & Eve, and Marc Dorcel directing some of the top talent over a career that spans 35 years and counting. Besides his prolific career in adult films, Canterbury has also directed mainstream movies with the likes of C. Thomas Howell and Jeff Conaway. Even with such a prolific career in moviemaking, Canterbury’s background is in literature, with a specialty in Shakespeare and Dickens. He was often asked about what it is like to work in the adult industry and after some thought, Stuart found the best way to illustrate the larger-than-life personalities and outrageous experiences was to frame it all in a tale of fiction. In 2015 he published his first novel called Turning Blue. In a 2017 interview, Canterbury described it as “a book about pornography that is not pornographic.” The two main characters and the struggles they each face are composites drawn from the experiences of Canterbury’s career in adult movies. Travis Lazar is a high-powered producer who clashes but finds success with Tiffany West, a diva porn star.
