Throwback Thursday: The Passions of Carol (1975)

Long before the days of Internet-streaming porn, adult entertainment was confined to in-person theatrical releases, and director Shaun Costello was churning them out by the dozens in the 1970s. As 1974 drew to a close, he figured that an adult adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol would be a big box-office hit for the holidays. Underestimating the budget and planning this movie would require, it eventually hit the theaters in spring of 1975, well after its intended release. The movie’s reception was tepid and confused, considering the timing and subject matter, but has now become a cult classic for the overall camp factor of a holiday classic sex-parody reimagining.

The Passions of Carol (1975)

The Passions of Carol follows a female character named “Carol Scrooge,” the grumpy owner of a sleazy skin publication who insists that all of her employees must work on Christmas. Much like A Christmas Carol, Carol Scrooge finds herself visited by three ghosts on the night of Christmas Eve. The ghosts show her three different versions of Christmas, each filled with their own sexually charged versions of Christmases past, present, and future. When presented with these three visions, Carol is infused with the Christmas spirit, and goes forth to undo her own curmudgeonly ways.
