Real Sex: it’s not just an HBO show from the 90s. Rumors of real sex on-screen between celebrities, are usually just that—rumors—but according to IMDB, there are about a hundred or so films out there that dabbled in “real intercourse.” And damn, because we love/hate celebrities so much, these rumors can be filthy fun. Now that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez have reabsorbed each other to become Bennifer 2.0, celebrity love lives are hot gossip again. Celebrity couples starring opposite each other on-screen in a sex scene often seems to fuel the “did they really?” gossip, as well as behind-the-scenes noise of hasty cuts to sex scenes to appease the authoritarians of the MPAA. But sometimes actors do confirm that some of these mainstream XXX rumors are true. Celebrities are society’s proxy Valentines, after all. Let’s take a look at ten sex scenes in mainstream films that just might be the real thing!
1. Kieran O’Brien & Margo Stilley in 9 Songs (2004)
An American college student and an English scientist get involved in several intense sexual encounters between several rock shows. Long before he was known as the father of famed footballer Jamie Tartt in Ted Lasso, Kieran O’Brien was a British indie actor and former child star of the BBC series Gruey. Kieran certainly let his child stardom far behind in this British indie film that features an amazing soundtrack and several unsimulated sex scenes with his co-star Margo Stilley, whose stages unfold in counterpoint to nine live-concert songs
2. Anna Paquin & Stephen Moyer in True Blood (2008)
True Blood was the HBO horror/fantasy wunderkind that sometimes played like an R-rated version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The first season stirred up a lot of attention, not just because of the fantasy-fueled gore and raunchiness on-screen, but the developing on-set romance between Anna Paquin and her co-star Stephen Moyer that fueled rumors that their initial sex scenes were real. Both Anna and Stephen poured gasoline on the gossip several times while being interviewed by the press. Both stars have said that their real-life romance made taping the sex scenes a lot easier, and Stephen Moyer told Entertainment Weekly that since they were a real life couple, a “fluffer” was not needed.
3. Kim Basinger & Alec Baldwin in The Getaway (1994)
A recently-released ex-con and his loyal wife go on the run after a heist goes awry. The remake of the gritty 70s action thriller featured one of the most-talked-about Hollywood couples at the time in the central roles, so of course they really fucked in the love scene. Rumors over the years about real sex in mainstream movies always seem to coalesce in films centered around actors in real-life centered in the public eye. Controversy sells tickets, but there might be some truth to this one. The US theatrical cut really trimmed down the sex scene, specifically a cunnilingus scene between Kim and Alec that is said to be completely unsimulated.
4. Chloë Sevigny & Vincent Gallo in The Brown Bunny (2003)
A motorcycle racer reconnects with an old flame. Famed movie critic Roger Ebert hated this slice of moody, indie narcissism more than he loathed a thousand horror movies, but the juiciest conversation around this flick was the authentic and very real oral sex scene between Chloë Sevigny and Vincent Gallo. Since its world premiere at Cannes the movie has been re-edited in various cuts, although the sex scene remains intact.
5. Mira Sorvino & John Leguizamo in Summer of Sam (1999)
Serial killers were also hot in the nineties apparently. Summer of Sam was Spike Lee’s take on the “Son of Sam” crimes in New York City during a heatwave in the summer of 1977, centering on an Northeast Bronx neighborhood whose neighbors live in distrust of one another due to the murders. The MPAA threatened the film with an “NC-17” rating because of the love scene between John Leguizamo and Mira Sorvino after they are denied entry into Studio 54. Some explicit shots were cut out, and rumor has it that it’s these shots that confirm that Mira Sorvino and John may have went “method.”
6. Melvin Van Peebles in Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (1971)
After coming to the aid a Black Panther a couple of racist and corrupt cops, a hustler goes on the run from “the man” with the help of his community and some disabused Hells Angels. The iconic Melvin Van Peebles wrote, directed, and stars in this exploitation classic, and has said he caught gonorrhea from one of the actresses during filming of one of the sex scenes. Melvin applied for compensation from the Directors Guild because he “got hurt on the job” and used the cash to buy more film. It doesn’t get any realer than that, ladies and gentlemen!
7. Lauren Lee Smith & Eric Balfour in Lie With Me (1999)
Two star-crossed lovers come together to have great sex, until shit stars to get toxic. Lauren Lee Smith recalls getting a call on the requirements for the role of Leila, which included not only nudity but on-camera live sex and blurting out, “Are you kidding?” Lauren soon met her co-star, Eric Balfour, and apparently the two had a lot of chemistry. So much chemistry, in fact, that Lauren agreed to the scenes, so the sex is authentic. This was confirmed by both stars of the film not long after it was released.
8. Robert Pattinson in Little Ashes (2009)
Little Ashes is a biopic of artist Salvador Dalí from filmmaker Luis Buñuel and writer Federico García Lorca starring everyone’s favorite brooding vampire—in a masturbation scene, no less. Robert Pattinson has admitted in interviews that he went full-method for the masturbation and orgasm scene featured in the film. Yep, from Edward’s mouth, that is a real orgasm. Batman Begins indeed! No matter what your orientation, an authentic Robert Pattinson cumshot should not be missed by even the most casual film fans.
9. Julie Christie & Donald Sutherland in Don’t Look Now (1973)
While vacationing in Venice, a married couple still mourning the death of their child encounter a psychic with an urgent warning for the grieving parents. This is probably one of the most-talked-about sex scenes on the list, and both Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie say the day of the infamous shoot was a rough one, and they were both quite terrified. Thankfully, they had champagne. The scene is not so much as graphic as it is intimate and oddly voyeuristic, adding fuel to the rumors over the years that the actors “really” got into character. The infamous sex scene was the first scene shot for the film, and the rumors continue to this day, but Donald Sutherland and the producer for the film have went on record to deny that scene is unsimulated.
10. Caroline Ducey & Rocco Siffredi in Romance
A sexually frustrated school teacher goes through a series of intimidating and often violent sexual partners. Romance is infamous for it’s no-holds-barred exploration of intimacy, and includes a number of graphic nudity and sex scenes. In an interview with The Post, director Catherine Breillat appeared to confirm the rumors of actual on-set sex. “An actor never pretends,” she said. “At the same time, I’m not perverse. I don’t impose on my actors or actresses any more than is absolutely necessary. But I don’t pretend. I don’t simulate.” Caroline Ducey was unaware of Rocco Siffredi’s career in adult entertainment up until the day of the shoot, and one of the reasons Rocco was cast was because of his impressive endowment, on full-display in the audacious and authentic sex scene with Caroline Ducey.
