For Black History Month, HotMovies teamed up with veteran performer Lotus Lain to interview Black performers and adult content producers to highlight their perspectives on the industry and their unique achievements. In the ninth Instagram Live interview, Lotus talked with Musa Phoenix about how yoga changed his life, finding his way to the adult industry through swinging, and the correct way to slide into another porn star’s DMs. Check out Lotus and Musa’s discussion below or watch the video on HotMovies’ YouTube or Instagram!
LL: Hey, hey, hey. It’s that time of day. You’re here with Lotus Lain, your girl for these HotMovies Black History Month Instagram live interviews. And I am about to talk with Musa Phoenix. Let me find him, let me add him up, let me get it going. [chuckle] Hey, everyone. Let’s see here.
MP: Oh, hey, hold on let me turn this over.
Thank you for joining me.
Honey, how is it going?
How are you today?
It’s super bright. [chuckle]
Good. Yeah, are you outside right now? Or are you just by a window?
No, no, no. So I have a little studio in my house, so I’m outta there.
Oh, so you have a studio set up for shooting in your living space?
Yes, I do, yeah.
Oh, cool. Taking it to that professional level already, I love that.
I’m trying to, trying to. We call it Little Hot Box Studio… because it be hot as shit. [chuckles]
Oh, okay, so what… You hot box, and you shoot there? What all do you do in that room?
Hot box, shoot, just whatever come to mind… [chuckles]
Okay, and when you do yoga, you really do yoga. You’re not just bullshitting stretching around. You actually practice with the art, right?
Right, right, and I teach as well so, yeah.
I didn’t know that. So you’re a yoga teacher? Is it private lessons or you teach somewhere at a studio?
So pre-COVID time I actually had my whole studio in a Black area in Los Angeles, that’s called Leimert Park, and I used to do donation-based classes for our community and stuff like that. But that was pre-COVID, so now I just teach whenever someone asks me, they want a class, or something like that.
Okay, dope, I didn’t even know that about you, that you really do the yoga. I kind of love that about this new era of male performers and content creators; you’re not just a dick.
Well, well, I try not to be a dick. [laughter]
Actually you’re not. You’re really a genuinely nice guy… and good-looking, too. [chuckles] So are you from the LA area?
No from DC originally.
Oh, okay, so how did you make it out this way?
So I made it to LA at the end of 2018, I drove across the country on a whim.
Oh, okay, you drove across the country. Was it you just said, “Fuck it. I’m gonna try and see what’s happening over there?”
Because of the yoga situation, LA was kinda of like the dream area to go to because so many people are involved in yoga. And so me and my daughter’s mother, we just was like, “Alright, we’re just gonna move. We’re just gonna go.” And we just went for it.
And now you’re out here making it. So when you came, was it always your plan to join into the adult industry or did that just…
That just kinda happened, right. So I was a swinger since 2010, and I actually went to…
Okay, talk to me a little bit about what that lifestyle is like—the swinger lifestyle—because that’s like a very secretive society. Not everyone knows about that. Are people just having sex? Do they meet at parties, and they just get down like that?
Let’s put it like this. In DC area we have a large population of swingers. It is crazy. So we used to have swinger parties for younger people so maybe the average would be 35 and under. We’ll—of course—have older people there too, but it was pretty young crowd. And we’d just rent out whole hotels, and we just did hotel takeovers, and just had lifestyle parties.
Oh shit. That sounds like a dream fantasy—lifestyle takeover of the hotel. So you had been doing that lifestyle, swinging and then…
This couple I knew from FetLife, they invited me to a party. And I didn’t know the party was a porn star birthday gangbang party. They needed the swingers there as the crowd in the background for their gangbang. So I wound up meeting a girl there, we winded up doing stuff. And then after that, a recruiter recruited me, and that’s how I got into it. So it was literally just a right-place-right-time type of situation.
Really! Do you remember whose porn star birthday party it was that you ended up cracking into?
It was Kitty Jaguar‘s.
Okay, yeah, I think I heard you say that anyways in my mind because I was like, “Oh, is that the girl with the tattoo on her ass?” Like ON her [makes a spreading motion] ASS [makes a puckered lip face] That’s amazing. Yeah, she’s a sweetheart. So that was her birthday party orgy that you kinda like crashed, and made your debut at.
Right, right, right, exactly. And so, after that they put me in some custom videos. And then I did See Him Fuck. And then it was on for me.
Nice, I love it, I love it. So you were always a sexual person, into sex… Was porn even a thought in your mind before this as a potential job avenue or just something that you just watched like everybody else?
Okay, so interestingly… content, right? Me and my daughter’s mother was making content for a long time. And we were on Facebook groups, and we were just posting clips.
Oh my God, freaky-ass people.
Right, right, right.
People don’t know about the freaky-ass Facebook group. “Oh, you still have a Facebook?” They try and clown and I’m like, “You don’t understand. Some of those groups put me on crazier shit than Twitter these days.”
Exactly, they was way more… ‘Cause it was about the community in the Facebook groups and you…
Yeah, yeah, I was gonna say, and you kind of see in real time the way real people are interacting and engaging in like sex and what they wanna hear and what they’re interested in. It is fun. So you guys were posting on those freaky-ass Facebook groups?
Yeah, and then it was just moreso for our friends to see, stuff like that. So that’s kind of like what warmed me up to doing content. ‘Cause I had already had some experience, you know? But I didn’t know what I could get paid from it, when you just posted it for fun. Right?
You were just having fun at the time? Oh, shit.
So that was like my dabbling in porn, but I never thought about actually getting into porn… It wasn’t a thing. Of course, I watched porn. [chuckles]
Do you think you’re more of an exhibitionist that’s gotten now into the business part of making money off of this?
Right, right, I think that’s what. And then now that I do my own content and stuff like that, it’s like… It’s also my art. So I get to put my own spin on sexuality as well.
I really love that. You know, again, going back to what I was saying in the beginning, that you’re not just a stunt dick. It’s really cool that you have this different philosophy and take on the way you wanna present your image, so kinda describe that for us. How did you come into thinking that you’re not just gonna be like a regular, average, basic representation of what the industry would like a Black guy to look like, or present or behave like, you know?
I think it was more so the fact that just listening to women. So being able to…[sound cuts out]
Say that again so they hear you!
Now y’all gotta listen, y’all gotta listen. So hearing their complaints. Hearing what satisfies them. Hearing what turns them on. And literally, I used to be on Facebook like, “Hey. Do y’all like this or this? Are y’all into this or that?” So I was literally asking questions just to get the feedback. You gotta get the feedback. So then that coupled with me starting to do yoga… and literally the reason I started to teach yoga is because the ladies in my community could see me in my window doing yoga off of a DVD.
You just happen to face the street?
No, no, no, face the courtyard, but everybody lived in the courtyard. It was three buildings and one courtyard.
Oh I see.
So, yeah. One day this lady walked up to me and was like, “I would love to learn how to do yoga. I always see you doing yoga in your window.” And I didn’t know anybody was watching me. Only that I was doing it for years. I didn’t know anybody was watching me.
Oh wow.
So she was like, “Yeah, can you teach us how to do yoga?” And I was like, “You know what? Let me find out.” I had a personal trainer’s cert at this time, but not no yoga training. So I went and found out and I actually got a scholarship to do it right, to do the yoga at the studio that accepted me.
Oh sweet. Did you learn over there in the DC area and got certified over there?
Yup.
Oh my God, that’s really cool that this lady’s interest in watching you in your courtyard actually led to you having this new career path, which is like a whole persona now.
Right, right, right exactly…
The way that you present yourself.
And you know what? It changed me as a person too. So I appreciate that being a part of my journey though.
How so did it change you as a person?
Because I honestly… let’s see how I could put it. So I was in the military, so I had to kinda lose that side of mind of everything gotta be this way. You know? And to move like a free…
The military really drills it in you. How long were you in there for?
For six years.
Okay, okay. So once you did the yoga that got you into a new mental state, how did it change you?
So, it just opened me up. I think of it as like. Okay, so… Perfect example. Your name is Lotus right? So when the lotus before it blooms it’s closed, it’s tight, it’s not fresh or whatever. And then once it blooms, it opens up to a 1,000 possibilities, so that literally is how it opened me up.
True.
Yeah, so it opened me up to a 1,000 possibilities. So I then let go of the structural mindset of like, “Oh, I gotta be corporate America. I gotta be put in this box. I gotta live this certain way.” And that opened me up to like, “Oh, I can make other things happen. I can, you know, think outside of the box and bring different energies in and different communities too.” Like I remember being in DC, the alt-right had came to DC to protest some stuff.
Oh…
We was down there . And it was a Trump supporter who was down there at the exact same time. He wasn’t part of the alt-right people, but he was a Trump supporter. And I gave him a hug. Because I was like, you know, we’re still humans at the end of the day and whatever you support him for is what you support him for. That doesn’t necessarily mean that’s not why I support my other side or whatever. So it just opened me up to be more accepting to other people that I wouldn’t normally be accepting to.
Yeah, you think it opened up your humanity in a sense? Okay, that sounds like really beautiful when you can let that down. You know that barrier when you know you don’t agree with people, but you could still see them for a human, and at the end of the day it matters.
Right, exactly, exactly and a lot of people suffer from groupthink. So it’s like, you know the people…
Groupthink, yeah.
So it’s like the people that you’re around—that’s the people that usually you associate the most with and stuff like that. So if they think one type of way, you’re most likely to think that type of way. But if you use critical thinking, you’ll accept all, so you can see the bigger picture.
I see. I mean, I love how spiritual and deep you are. Do you travel in a group of friends or are you more of like a solo person? You go on your own?
Okay, so I am an intro-extrovert, so I could do both, really.
Okay.
Like I could be in solitude and meditate, and just wanna have time to myself. But I could also wanna be around people and receive different type of energies and stuff like that. So it’s a little bit of both.
I love that. So now that you’re here, you’re in your porn journey: do you remember what your first porn scene was, actually?
The pro one, okay. So the pro one was See Him Fuck, that’s what it was.
Okay. Yeah, that’s kind of the site where it focuses on the male, right?
Right, exactly. So their whole thing is they like to see women worship men versus… ‘Cause most porn is the man doing a lot of stuff to the woman. So this one is kinda like reverse roles. Which is perfect for me because it gives me a chance to take in some of the stuff that women might be attracted to about porn, and stand for men themselves.
Yeah, yeah, I bet you loved that. Who did you work with on that scene?
I worked with Kyler Quinn, who’s a Hussie model, and she’s one of their top Hussie models.
Yes, I think I know who that is. She’s like a skinny, slim girl.
Right.
So another question that I have, that’s kind of like… it goes between two girls that say they’re the ones that brought you into the industry. So it’s either between my girl Nadia, Goddess Supreme, or my girl they call Juice Box: Olivia Jayy. Who was the one that was at the forefront?
Alright, alright, alright. So…
I’m putting you on the spot.
Here’s the thing, right? Nadia is one of my partners from FetLife. And me and her was dealing with each other for a very long time, and she’s how I met the couple who brought me to the party.
Kitty’s party.
So me and her been play partners and stuff like that. Some of our experiences, like going to parties and stuff like that, led to me getting into the industry. And she was a great supporter of it, too. She always used to be like, “You should definitely be a porn star. You should be doing this.” Like building my confidence to get into this even before I thought about doing it. I didn’t have my OnlyFans—anything like that. And then on top of that, Olivia was one of the very first persons that I was doing constant content with within the industry. And she’s an amazing performer as well, so like… Man, she from home, so…
Yeah, yeah, I was like, did you guys meet out there when you were in DC or did you actually meet over here?
We actually met in LA.
How funny that you’re both from the DC area.
So I think it was one of those things, like… She had saw something that I did. And when she saw it, she had liked it. And then I had went and DM-ed her. And then we found out we was from the same area. So we wound up linking up and doing content and stuff like that. But we’ve been cool ever since. So yeah.
So it was a two-way package…
Right, right. It’s different aspects.
Yeah, different roads into the industry. That’s cool. Alright. And [chuckles] I was gonna say, do you remember how we actually first met?
I think… So we first met because of Olivia, see. And it was at Ana Foxxx’s birthday party.
Yeah. Do you know what you were doing?
I was there, I was putting on a show [chuckles] with Olivia at the birthday party, and…
[laughter] Yeah, it was funny and cool. All of a sudden, out of the blue. I never even met you, I was just like, “Who’s this guy fucking Olivia?” So awesome.
Right, right, right, right. So yeah, so I met y’all crowd through Olivia too as well, because she invited me to the birthday party and stuff. And it was definitely fun. It was definitely fun.
So you’re definitely the man to be invited to birthday parties is what it seems like. [chuckles] Like, “Happy birthday!” Want it cracking, popping, sexy? Invite Musa.
Right.
That’s what it says. That’s what I’m hearing.
And then I always go there like, I always tell people like, “Look, I’m not a partier no more,” stuff like that. But for some reason, get me to a party and it’s a party.
Maybe they’re like cool vibes. What is your sign?
I’m a Pisces. Actually, my birthday is coming up, March 2nd.
Pisces ARE coming up. Okay. Happy early birthday, happy early birthday.
Right, thank you.
I was going to say, since you did initiate your first interaction with Olivia through a DM—oftentimes, guys mess that whole process up. So walk us through how to do a proper DM, reach out to someone where it actually leads to good content happening, and not to getting blocked.
[laughter] Right, right, right, right. So by the way, I’ve been blocked before. This is a learning process, okay?Right. It happens.
So it’s two approaches, right?
Right.
Alright. So the first approach is if you all are flirting back and forth, you all are commenting, you all are liking their stuff like that, you can hop in the DM with a… more of a compliment, like, “Oh, you’re very attractive,” like, “How’s your day going?” “I hope you’re having a good day.” That’s more of a flirty approach to it. Okay. Then you have the professional side. If someone is very technical, like, “I am an actress. I’m 100% no feelings in the world, just straight business,” right? Then you gotta go in their DM as straight business. Don’t go in the DM telling them all “Sexy, sweety,” none of that. You gotta be like, “Hey, I love your work. I would love to work with you.” [chuckles]
Yeah, straight to the point. Yeah, exactly. I really love that you laid it out, the two different approaches. Because you’re right, depending on the way the girl is that you’re trying to collaborate with, you don’t wanna approach her or come at her the wrong way. Like if she’s a fun, flirty girl, yeah, you wanna match that energy. But if she’s serious business, you don’t wanna disrespect, and come in acting like you know her too much, joking around.
Right. Exactly, exactly. And I think that’s where guys mess up because even if they get the initial talk, girls always say, “Well, they talk their way out [of] the pussy.” And it does happen.
[laughter] Oh my God it’s so true! They do, they do, sadly, you know, sadly.
Right, right. Exactly, exactly, so it’s like… It’s like you gotta feel the vibe, for sure.
Yeah, so one of the things I wanted to ask you about since we’re talking during Black History Month, and you’re gonna be part of the Black futures of porn, who are some of the people that you watched, and enjoyed back before you started getting in the industry?
Ah, man. I had so many favorites. Let me see, like Sinnamon. Sinnamon Love.
Oh, yeah.
So I think it’s like mainly that generation of porn stars that I’ve really grew up to because that was my years. Right. [laughter] Yeah, so… So, definitely like that whole, that whole generation big ups to them because I know… And then even though this is 2022, I still see the struggle of Blacks in any industry. It’s not even just our industry, but any industry across the board. So it’s like big ups to the people who was doing it when they had no support.
Yeah, exactly. And you know, Sinnamon is someone that’s still here, she runs the BIPOC Collective so she does a lot of stuff that helps other Black, and Brown performers.
Right, exactly, exactly. Like I still see… Yeah, I can still see the remnants of what they did, and just trying to build upon that because it’s important to keep it going. Because of the fact that like our version of sexuality is based on porn so they only seeing one type of porn—or one type of person’s view on porn. They’re not seeing everybody’s view, because it’s not just about killing the pussy and murdering some throat. It’s all about sensuality, it’s about honoring your partner; making sure that they are pleased, and all that other stuff as well.
I really hope more people, more men performers, hear this from you because it’s so true. Honoring your partner, making sure they’re comfortable, and feel good as well. That’s more important than the cum shot itself, I believe.
Right, exactly, exactly. Because at the end of the day, you want your partner to be pleased.
Yeah, right? So, what are some of your favorite kinds of scenes: professional scenes to shoot and what are some of your personal favorites?
Okay, so… Professional scenes… Of course I love boy-girl. It’s a more personal type of…
Of interaction.
You know, that type of stuff. I have fun doing blowbangs, and gangbangs, and stuff. But they’re not like my personal favorites to do. But I have fun doing it because it’s always a lot of energy. When I say a lot of energy, I mean, it’s always [makes sound effects and hand motions] something going on. So that’s always fun. You get to interact, and stuff like that. Let’s see… Of course, because of me doing yoni massages, and stuff like that, I’ve actually been able to do that professionally—on professional scenes as well. So I always love that as well. And working with MILFs, too… I don’t know, there’s something about an experienced woman, that just be like, “Alright, I’m learning something new, too.”
Yeah, so you have worked with some MILFs, have you? Who are some notable MILFs you’ve been able to work with in the game recently?
So, I’ve worked with Ryan Conner, I’ve worked with… Sheesh… I’ve been doing a lot. [laughter]
Yeah, you’re drawing a blank. It’s all so good that you blanked out. [chuckles]
Right, right, right, I’m just seeing flashes looks you see, I had a moment there, and that was a pleasurable moment by the way.
I saw it, I literally saw it in your eyes… [chuckles]
Right, right, that was a very pleasurable moment right there. It’s been an incredible ride, especially within this last year and a half. So, I hope to work with more.
Are you with a talent agency?
Yeah, I’m with Hussie.
Okay, cool, and Hussie has been hooking you up with some good…
They definitely been hooking me up with some good scenes, and stuff like that. So I appreciate them, and their support. Especially because they have a large brand.
Yeah, and they have a large roster. And it sounds like you’re doing really well there. One of the things that I wanted to ask you since we’re thinking about futures and stuff: what do you think is your future legacy in the industry? What are some future scenes you maybe still wanna accomplish that you haven’t done yet? Or even future career business things that you wanna achieve?
So, me personally? I try to focus moreso on my content as far as building. Because when you go on set, they already got what they wanna do on set. So but me personally, I wanna build more of my yoga and sensuality. And I do BDSM as well, and education. So I wanna actually be teaching people maybe we need to take a different look at what sexuality is and all this other stuff.
So yeah, so with BDSM, do you ever sub or switch?
No, I never switch, I am always a Dom; I’m not into being dommed.
You are all Dom.
It just doesn’t please me.
I gotta ask.
No, I understand. I appreciate that though, yeah. So yeah, for sure. It’s just one of those things [where] the thought doesn’t bring me pleasure. So I know in the action of it, it’s not really doing it for me.
The best thing nowadays about modern new porn stars coming to the forefront is we’re deciding what feels good for us as opposed to the studio deciding, “You should be doing the scenes,” or the agent saying, “Don’t do this. You should be doing this.” You have the freedom and flexibility to make your own path.
Right. Thanks to the content creators part of it, it definitely took some control back because now the studios are willing to work with people a little bit more to say like, “Alright, maybe we should do this.” Like the scene with Indica Flower and Rico Strong—that was supposed to be us being some pimps or something like that. And then Indica was like, “Well, why don’t we just do yoga?” And it turned out great.
Yeah, and that’s for both you and her. I love that that is what’s happening now, that the content creation era has empowered performers to be able to speak up more on set and demand they be represented the way they want. Because you’re not the first performer that I’ve heard this from. So this kind of momentum really gives me hope that the industry is seeing the importance of the performers’ voice.
For real, for real. And it’s a great time to be in it because of the fact that this is the future of what we want people to see so let’s bring some difference, too. Let’s be more inclusive to pleasure.
Exactly. Bring some positivity to the sexuality space. Yes. Well, you know what, I really, really enjoyed this moment to get to know you better—to ask you about your origins, to hear all about your journey, and where you’re gonna go next. So let everybody that’s watching known where they can find you and find your content and all that good stuff.
Alright. So you can find me @musaphoenix1. That’s on Twitter, and that’s on OnlyFans. And @musaphoenix.1st on Instagram. Also, I have Reddit and other stuff, too… ManyVids. I’m building more on that… my content on there as well. Also, I wanna say this. I wanna say this, right? We need to be more inclusive. As a straight man, we need to be more inclusive to the LGBTQ+ community as well, because of the fact that it’s all about building bridges and not tearing down and not being destructive.
You are so right about that. And I’m so glad that you said that, because, especially as a straight man in this industry, so many are scared to speak on that. Because they feel like it takes away from their straightness or it’s a notification that they’re on the DL somehow. But I love that you’re confident in your own self to just say, “You know, we need to be inclusive, period.”
Oh, yeah.
That’s like the best final thought I’ve heard in a long time. Thank you so much for getting that out there because… Yeah, you know more men need to hear that so they can see, it’s not gay to support LGBTQ people. It’s just human. Well, thank you so much for your time today, Musa. I hope you have a beautiful, wonderful Wednesday and the rest of your day. And everybody else in the audience. Thank you Nadia for joining. And everybody else that was down there asking questions, waving, saying hi.
Alright. Stay blessed.
