Smut or historical document? Well, no one said it can’t be both!
Peekarama (from the fine folks at Vinegar Syndrome, the famous cult movie imprint) has recently released a slew of fascinating porn vids from the industry’s golden age.
To survey these titles is to become a porn archaeologist excavating a fresh dig of an ancient city filled with wonder. The titles alone offer plenty of intrigue. Coca Cola Girl is a seven-minute silent scene featuring a few very naughty ideas about how to have fun with a Coke bottle. (Hint: hosing down the tasty beverage itself is only the first step.) Babysitter, Secretary, and Schoolgirls’ Dream all play on familiar porn themes, albeit with a decidedly old-school approach. Is Marriage Obsolete, one title ponders. (The lack of question mark is an indication where the movie might land on this particular question.) Others are more inscrutable: Love And The Great Grunt, anyone?
I decided to take a closer look at Sex Smorgasbord, an eight-minute porn “loop,” to get a greater feel for this slice of the Peekarama catalog. (Hey, who doesn’t love a smorgasbord, be it at the local eatery or indeed from a classic porn studio?)
Charmingly, we open on a game of Monopoly. Leave it to classic porn to make this most unsexy of games a risqué and provocative experience. Apparently, Boardwalk and Park Place weren’t getting anyone hot and heavy, so the participants have created a homebrew version of the game. The corner square is modified to say “Go to bed,” and what do you know it? A lucky roll lands one participant in just that spot. The night’s recreation quickly switches from a roll of the dice to a roll in the hay. We then eavesdrop on a blowjob, a full-on foursome, and even some 69 action, all within the space of just a few minutes! The finale features a a subtle cut between the BJ and the cumshot, an indication that such editorial trickery is certainly nothing new.
Like Coca Cola Girl, Smorgasbord is a silent feature. Peekarama could have opted to modernize the footage by attaching a soundtrack, but they were wise to leave well enough alone. The lack of sound creates an extra layer of authenticity, to say nothing of its ability to stoke your imagination.
Peekrama treats these curios as erotic entertainment but also as time capsules and relics of pop culture. When it comes to archival attention, porn is usually neglected, so it’s fun to see these clips spiffed up and re-released.
