Ginger Robinson’s Advice to Porn Newbies

Just in time for Mother’s Day, we’re happy to affirm that mom really does know best.

Last year, we were lucky enough to snare an interview with trending MILF Ginger Robinson. Her answer regarding advice for porn newbies was so memorable, we decided it needed to be a blog post all in itself. This de-facto “guest column” functions as a superb primer for any aspiring stars!

HotMovies: What is your main advice to other women hoping to break into the industry in the same way you have?

Ginger Robinson: So this is going to be a long one because I think it’s really important:

-Be absolutely 100% certain you are comfortable with videos of you naked and having sex being available for the rest of your life and your kids’ lives. Talk to people you trust – people who will not just cosign everything you say.

-Be cognizant of the reality that it will be extremely difficult to have a career in any other industry if you do porn. It won’t be impossible, but it will be very challenging. This was a conversation I had with my own daughter when she told me she was starting an OnlyFans. She is a professional singer whose job was shut down when Covid hit, so fortunately the entertainment industry is a little more laid back than say finance or education. She also told me she wouldn’t want to work for anyone who had a problem with it.

-Be safe and always take STD testing seriously. Fortunately for me, I’ve had some pretty badass mentors to guide me. Cherie DeVille, in particular, has explained the PASS system to me and why it’s so important to only shoot with performers in PASS. I’ve also heard horror stories from a lot of people about performers altering test results, as well as trying to slide through with expired tests. Since I don’t have sex outside of porn, I KNOW I’m clean and clear, so it’s always frustrating to hear of performers having unprotected sex with strangers during the 14-day period they’re supposedly cleared. This actually happened on set once. I overheard someone talking about meeting someone the night before and hooking up. I was really stressed out that I would come up positive for something the next time I tested. Fortunately, all was well, but it was super scary and definitely taught me to be extra careful.

-Be smart and vigilant and read every contract, especially if it’s for a management team or agency, and have all contracts reviewed by an attorney, no matter how well you know the person asking you to sign the contract.

-Be frugal, save your money, and don’t insult the IRS. OnlyFans, in particular, was very lucrative during the height of the pandemic. There were months I’d earn more than I had in the 49 years prior combined, so it was really easy to get lazy with budgeting and to buy things I hadn’t been able to afford pre-porn. I quickly realized it could end at any time, and I started to be smarter with my finances. I’ve seen many girls who bought baller mansions during Covid, only to panic as the world started to open back up because not as many fans were stuck inside, so revenue started to decrease across the board. I’ve also heard from a lot of girls who never knew they were supposed to save money to pay estimated quarterly taxes. My dad taught me when I was a teenager to never insult the IRS.

-Be humble. After I shot my first scene with Brazzers, I sat with Keiran Lee for a few hours, and we talked about the industry, and he gave me some great advice. When he mentioned the importance of remaining humble and to never get cocky, it really resonated with me. When I got sober almost 19 years ago, I learned a lot about humility, and I started to live my life in such a way that I’m just a slice of bread in the middle of the loaf. I treat people equally and kindly, and I’m friendly to everyone. I’ve taken every success in porn with a heavy dose of gratitude, and I never want to come across as arrogant. I also ask for a lot of help and guidance from women who have been here much longer than me. When I was nominated for AVN’s Hottest MILF, I called Cherie and asked what she and other OGs do and say about their nominations on socials. I never want to appear as if I’m gloating, tacky, or desperate.

-Be prepared to work REALLY hard. There’s a huge misconception that porn is easy, I actually thought it would be too. I was very wrong. The content is the easier part (and obviously the most fun), but the social branding, engagement with fans, maintaining multiple platforms, and navigating the industry are very time-consuming, especially in the beginning. And if you go the mainstream porn route, studio days can be long and exhausting. A lot of my fans tell me they want to be in porn, and I believe they think they’ll get to have hours and hours of sex with tons of hot women all day long. They don’t realize it’s not like that at all!

-Be thick-skinned. This is probably the most important one of all. I’m still surprised regularly by people who treat me differently and “friends” who have completely stopped talking to me because I went from a “regular” mom with a “regular” career to doing porn. Like any other job I’ve had, I go to work, I do my job, and I go home to be Mom. I’m still the same silly, corny, boring mom who lives for her kids. My kids are well-adjusted, open-minded, happy, and content. I hadn’t realized the moral police would be so interested in what I’m doing.
